Jargon Writer®
Installation Instructions
Version 3.3

Jargon Writer Installation Steps

Download the zipped installation file to a folder on your PC (ex: "C:\Installers") and unzip it into the same folder. It contains one "msi" file and three "bat" files.

If you are updating an existing version:

  1. In Windows Explorer, locate your existing Jargon Writer working directory (the default is "C:\JargonWriter33")

  2. Empty the "cache" subfolder (remove all ".dom" files)

  3. Make copies of your personalized "writer.cfg" and "xml\writer\writer.ini" files

  4. Run the "updateJW.bat" script to install Jargon Writer over the top of your existing Jargon Writer working directory. For example, if your current installation is C:/JargonWriter33, then select that as the installation folder name. This will replace all standard files with newer versions, but will not affect any files that you have added (such as new xml files, new images and data files).

  5. Restore your personalized writer.cfg and writer.ini files after installing the new version

If you are installing for the first time:

  1. Run the "installJW.bat" script to install the Jargon Writer software. (You can also just double-click the "msi" installer file, but this will not create an install log).

The Jargon Writer installer file name should be similar to "JargonWriter33.msi".

The default installation directory is "C:\JargonWriter33". This becomes your Jargon Writer working directory. While you can specify any installation directory that you wish, we recommend using the default or a similar directory on another drive, such as "D:\JargonWriter33", to help with any support issues. Within this working directory that you select during installation, the following subdirectories will be created:

4gl Default folder for generated host procedures for Progress host environments.
asp Application, demo and utility host procedures for Microsoft ASP environments
cache Cached ".dom" files for apps run by ReaderPDA or ReaderWIN
deploy Jargon compression utility (jsicomp) and other deployment tools
doc Online help documents and images

  2.

  3. Install your license file

Install the license file (provided to you by Jargon Software) in the "system" subdirectory, replacing the evaluation license file. In the next step enter this license name in the preferences file. Also be sure to keep a backup of this file in another location.

  4.

  5. Modify the writer.ini preferences or create new preference files.

    • The xml/writer/writer.ini file is the default preferences file. You may create any number of additional application-specific ini files by copying writer.ini to a new filename and adding this name to the writer.cfg configuration file in the working directory. Each preference file named in writer.cfg can be selected from a combobox at Writer startup.
    • Change the LicenseFile value to the name of your license file.
    • Uncomment and modify the appropriate set of HostURL and Script parameters to the correct values for your host environment.
    • Set the DefaultExecutable to ReaderPDAExecutable or ReaderWINExecutable.
    • Refer to the detailed notes in the writer.ini file for further information about how to assign values for these and other parameters including confirmation settings, backup levels, folder and file locations, grid line colors, etc.
    • Copy the writer.ini file to a backup folder so you can restore it with these new settings when installing new versions of Jargon Writer in the future.
  6.

  7. Install host procedures.

Copy the "jsi" host source procedures to your host system and uncompress them (for "zip" and "tar" files). See the specific "Host Software Installation Instructions" for your host environment in the installation index for further details.
