Manual Install/Uninstall Procedures

Manual Uninstall of ReaderX:

Jargon ReaderX is normally automatically installed when you navigate to a web page that contains the "OBJECT" tag (for IE) or "EMBED" tag (for Firefix or Netscape) that specifies the version and download location for Jargon ReaderX.

If this does not happen automatically, or if an install becomes corrupted or is only partially installed, etc., the following steps can be used.

To manually uninstall a version of ReaderX, follow the following steps:

If you are using Internet Explorer, then:

  1. In Windows Explorer, go to C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files
  2. Right-click on the Jargon ReaderX class
  3. Select Remove
If you are using Netscape 4.x (4.70 or higher):
  1. In Netscape 4, go to Edit-->Preferences-->Advanced-->SmartUpdate
  2. Select the Jargon Software ReaderX plugin
  3. Click Uninstall
If you are using Firefix or Netscape 7:
  1. In Windows Explorer, go to the plugins\Jargonsoft folder within your Netscape program folder.
  2. Unregister the ReaderX.dll using a DOS command window (see below)
  3. Close the DOS window. Go to the plugins folder in Windows Explorer.
  4. Delete the "Jargonsoft" sub-folder.
  5. Delete the "NPReadX.dll" file.
To unregister ReaderX from the registry, when using Firefix or Netscape 7 or a test ReaderX.dll:
  1. Open a command prompt (DOS window) in the directory that contains the "JReaderX.dll" file
  2. C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files
    or
    <netscape install directory>\programs\plugins\jargonsoft

  3. To uninstall an existing version, enter:
c:\windows\system\regsvr32.exe /u JReaderX.dll
(Win95/98)
or
c:\winnt\system32\regsvr32.exe /u JReaderX.dll
(WinNT/2000)
or
c:\windows\system32\regsvr32.exe /u JReaderX.dll
(WinXP)

Then reboot to make sure a copy is not still in memory.

After rebooting you can rename or remove the JReaderX.dll file. Do NOT remove this
file before uninstalling as above, otherwise you will have to manually edit the registry.
If you get into this situation, please contact Jargon Software support first.

Manual Install of ReaderX:

To automatically install a new version in Internet Explorer, Firefox or Netscape 7:

  1. Go to a web page that uses ReaderX and it should auto-install.
  2. If Firefox or Netscape 7 does not ask to install the "xpi" file automatically, you can also
download the "xpi" file to your local hard drive, then double-click it in Windows Explorer.
  3. If using Firefix or Netscape 7, you must also manually register the dll (see below).
Manual Install of ReaderX in Netscape 4 (4.7x or higher):
If the automatic install procedures for Netscape 4.x versions do not work, you can download a zip file and install it manually by doing the following steps.
  1. Download jrxplugin.zip from your web server. The URL will be something like:

  2. http://www.YOURDOMAIN.com/jrx/jrxplugin.zip

  3. Use WinZip to extract the contents of jrxplugin.zip to the Plugins folder for Netscape 4.x.

  4. Make sure that "Use Folder Names" is checked. This will extract "NPReaderX.dll" into the Plugins folder and create a Jargonsoft sub-folder within Plugins containing JReaderX.dll

To register ReaderX in the registry, when using Firefix or Netscape 7 or a test ReaderX.dll

From a command prompt in the plugins\Jargonsoft directory, enter:
      c:\windows\system\regsvr32.exe JReaderX.dll
      (Win95/98)
        or
      c:\winnt\system32\regsvr32.exe JReaderX.dll
      (WinNT/2000)
        or
      c:\windows\system32\regsvr32.exe JReaderX.dll
      (WinXP)

This should install and register ReaderX as a plugin for Netscape. It will also register it for use in Internet Explorer.
