What's New In Version 3

The latest releases of V3 Jargon Reader contain many new features including:
  • Modal dialog boxes
  • Video camera support
  • Signature capture
  • FTP support to get/put a binary file
  • Many new system level methods
  • Tabpanels and other new components (*)
For details, see the latest V3 Release Notes.

(*) The new GUI components will require Jargon Writer Version 3.3. This upcoming major new release is a complete rewrite of our cornerstone development tool. While all previous versions of Jargon Writer have been written in Java, this new version is an XML app that runs in a special version of Jargon Reader for Windows. Yes, we are "dog-fooding" our own products!

New features in the first release include:
  • Search and replace in the script editor (at last!!)
  • "Go to" a specified line number (where the bug is!)
  • View, change and save your preferences file
  • "Generate 4GL" now creates "stub" include files
See a sneak preview of the new script editor in V3.3.

What's New In Version 2

While our Version 2 products are in the mature stage of their life cycle (meaning new releases will contain mostly bug fixes), we have added some new features in the most recent releases.

New features in recent releases of V2 Jargon Writer and Jargon ReaderX include:
  • New host method "jsi/combobox/addlist.i" to send choices that contain commas
  • New "maxChars" attribute on text components to limit input text size
  • Allow deselection of individual rows in multi-row table selections
  • New options to use SSL encryption on all or selected host tasks
  • Math utilities for decimals
  • Table column headings as buttons with events
  • New features to send large tables as host task parameters
  • New host method to add items to a combobox in a table cell
  • Provide support for Netscape 6 and 7 in install files.
  • Remember which component has focus when a frame is reselected
For complete details, see the Version 2 release notes for Jargon Writer and Jargon ReaderX.

Tips from Tech Support

Are you running V3 apps on Windows 2003 Server? You may find it is much more tightly "buttoned down" than the previous WIndows 2000 and Windows NT servers.

For instance, by default, IIS 6 will not serve ".ini" files, unless you add them to the allowed MIME types. For more details, see the installation docs for client XML apps.

Also, when installing Tunnel Broker on Windows 2003, there are several new or changed steps. See the Tunnel Broker install docs.
