JavaTM Installation Instructions

Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Installation

Jargon Writer requires a Java 2 Standard Edition (J2SE) Java Runtime Environment (JRE). For Version 3 of Jargon Writer, you should use version 1.4 of the JRE, which is contained in a separate install file. Install the JRE first, before installing Jargon Writer.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Build 197 of Jargon Writer Version 3 is the first release that requires version 1.4 of the JRE. All previous Jargon Writer versions required JRE 1.2. Current customers must download and install the new JRE before installing this release.

If you do not have an install file for version 1.4 of the JRE (Java Runtime Environment), you can download it from Sun's Java web site and then follow their installation instructions to install the new JRE files.

For JRE downloads, go to http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html to download the latest JavaTM 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SETM) Version 1.4 JRE software. Note that you only need to download the JRE. You do NOT need the full SDK.

If you install a new JRE and use a different directory name than the one previously used by your old version, be sure to update all necessary directory and classpath values in shortcuts, menu entries and "ini" files for Jargon Reader and Jargon Writer applications.

Installation steps:

  • Close all Windows programs except the bare essentials, including the various utility programs in the system tray. In particular, close any antivirus programs, as their use may interfere with a clean installation.

  •
  • Run the Java self-installer software. The file name will be something like "j2re-1_4_2_01-windows-i586.exe" for the full Windows domestic US version.

  •
  • The required Java Runtime Environment (JRE) software will be installed automatically when you run the install program and respond to questions as prompted. You might want to override the default install directory and use a shorter path such as "C:\jre142", but that is optional.
  • Installing JavaDocs for Java 2 Classes
Due to Sun's licensing restrictions, the HTML files for the JavaDoc API documentation of the Java 2 SDK classes cannot be redistributed by Jargon Software. The default links to these documentation files are set in the preferences.ini file in the system subdirectory to point to Sun's web site, and can be viewed online if you have an Internet connection.

You may also download a zip file of these docs and install them on your local system or intranet, so long as you update the docs whenever Sun releases a new version. If you do so, then change the preferences.ini parameters to point to local file links rather than Sun's web site for these docs.

To download the docs, go to http://java.sun.com/docs and select the appropriate format (typically a zip file of HTML documents).
