Jargon WriterTM
Installation Instructions

Jargon Writer Installation Steps

1. Install the Java 2 JRE software

Be sure that you have completed the Java Installation (JRE)  step first, before installing Jargon Writer.
2. Install the Jargon Writer software.
Run the Jargon Writer self-installer software. The file will be named something like "jargonwriter.exe". The required client software will be installed automatically when you run the install program and respond to questions as prompted.

The default installation directory is "C:\Jargonsoft". This becomes your Jargon Writer working directory. While you can specify any installation directory that you wish, we recommend using the default or a similar directory on another drive, such as "D:\Jargonsoft", for ease of support. Within this working directory that you select during installation, the following subdirectories will be created (note: some may not be present in the V3.0 release):

4gl Procedures generated by Jargon Writer for Progress environments
deploy Jargon compression utility and other deployment tools
doc Online help documents and images
images Image and other multi-media files used by applications
lib Jargon Writer executables:  "jar" and "zip" class files
Oracle Host procedures, demos and sample apps for Oracle host environments
PDAEmulator Jargon PDA Emulator executable
Progress Host procedures for Progress host environments
Progress\java Java procedures used by Jargon Writer for source code generation
Progress\nt Zip files of Progress host procedures for Windows NT/2000/XP servers
Progress\shell Shells used when generating Progress 4GL source procedures
Progress\unix Tar files of Progress host procedures for Unix/Linux servers
ReaderWin Jargon Reader Emulator for Windows executable
system Jargon Writer startup, configuration and license files
templates XML templates used when creating a "New" Jargon Writer app.
xml Client Application procedure (XML) files

3. Download and Unzip the JavaDocs for the Sun Java 2 Classes (optional).
By default, Jargon Writer help documentation for Sun's Java classes is linked to the online docs at the Sun web site. If you wish to download and install these documentation files on your local client system or intranet, see instructions in the Installing JavaDocs for Java 2 Classes section.
4. Install your license file
Install the license file (provided to you by your Jargon Software representative) in the "system" subdirectory, replacing the evaluation license file. Also keep a copy of your license file in some other location, in case it accidentally gets overwritten in the system directory.
5. Modify the preferences.ini File.
Modify the "Host adapter" parameters for startup and runtime values in the "system\preferences.ini" file (under your working directory) as needed for your installation. Uncomment the appropriate parameters for your environment's middleware type, and comment out the other choices. Set the Host URL and Script name to the correct values. Set the desired execution engine to the PDA Emulator or the Windows desktop engine. Refer to the detailed notes in the preferences.ini file for further information about how to assign values for these and other parameters.

If you have several applications with different parameter values, make a copy of preferences.ini and rename it (example: "MyApp.ini"). This is also a good idea even if you only have one application, in order to keep an unmodified copy of the default "preferences.ini" file. Modify the parameters in your new "ini" file, then copy the Jargon Writer desktop shortcut or menu item and add a new parameter to the end of the startup command: " system/MyApp.ini" (by editing the properties of the shortcut or menu item).

6. Install host procedures.
Copy the host source procedures to your host system(s) and uncompress them (for "zip" and "tar" files).  See the specific "Host Software Installation Instructions" for your host environment in the installation index for further details.
